Watercolor Inn & Resort Engagement | Gabe + Cassie
watercolor-florida-wedding-photographer

Oh my goodness, I am just a little bit excited about this engagement session. Meet Cassie. We were roommates in college and by default best friends, fellow study buddies, “shhh’d” in the library pal and fellow Gilmore girls veggie. (She loved it. I by default watched it. Lol.) That’s not the cool part, though….

She waited for Gabe. No… for real. Cassie didn’t date. Ever. She waited for her someone even despite being sought after in college. And good grief, she was worth being pursued by her someone. She is the sassiest, funniest, wittiest and one of the most beautiful people I’ve ever known!

I have waited so long for Gabe. (Go with me here.. lol) I have waited to see who she would end up with because he was going to have to be someone special. And he is.

Gabe grew up along the Gulf Coast, so it was only fitting for us to shoot their engagement session in Watercolor, Florida! The Watercolor Lakehouse backdrop was perfect for Gabe and the beach at sunset fit Cassie. These two together flowed like they were meant to be.

I Said I Would Not Photograph Families
watercolor inn and resort

Can I let you in on a secret?

I said I would not photograph families. 😱

By industry standards - it wasn't cool. It was kind of at the bottom of the totem pole. If you booked weddings - or "destination" weddings (gasp!) - you were wanted. Successful. All of those things.

So, I photographed families and didn't market it. I didn't post about it. But very quickly I realized that I was not only having a blast with each family during our time together... but that I loved it. And maybe even more than that - I was good at it. It felt good photographing something that I am at the core of myself passionate about - family.

And now?

Family portraits make up the bulk of my work. AND I LOVE IT. It fuels me. These families mean something to me. Over time photographing them over and over again every Summer, I have come to consider a lot of them great friends. They have reached out to me when hurricanes came through. They have cheered me on and encouraged me to trust God when Cory and I thought we only wanted to be dog parents. They were then the same ones who congratulated me, gave me advice and prayed for us when we had Rylynn.

The thing that I said I would never do has become something that I am wildly passionate about.

It's more than standing behind a camera for me. It is loving these families where they are, sharing in their love for the Emerald Coast/30A area and showing them through their images that the best times are now.

Family sessions like the Haney family session in Grayton Beach, Florida remind me of why I love Summertime so much on the Gulf Coast. The punches of color in the sunsets. The laughter of kids as they run up and down the shoreline without a care in the world. It makes my heart come alive!

This crew had all of that! Thank you so much, Haney family, for letting me photograph your flawless family! You made me fall in love with these Summer nights all over again!

What Motherhood Taught Me About God
How I saw God in motherhood | Kaylie B. Poplin Photography | Birmingham, Alabama Family & Wedding Photographer

The respect I have for moms has gone through the roof since I've watched my sister become a mom to the most beautiful child I've ever seen (Insert, bias opinions but truth ;) ). The amount of energy, time and affection they lay down for their little human blows my mind. The protection moms flood their little persons with is what got my attention.

I know what the Bible says, but sometimes I feel like I have to scream at heaven to get the attention of Jesus. "Why don't you hear me? Do you even care? Why did this happen? You obviously don't care about me."

And then I watch a mom with a little human that cannot give anything in return. I watch the hours that they rock, and all the child returns is tears. I watch the energy they put forth in providing every need, and all the child can return is disscontempt for the provision at times.

All of a sudden, I realize just how good He is to us His children even though we have nothing to return to Him.

All of you who are moms : You are killing it. You are raising that child incredibly. You are so good at it. You are insanely gorgeous with your hair up and exhausted eyes. You have opened my eyes to who He is through your selfless love. Thank you.

It's such an honor to have Cory and my wedding featured on Style Me Pretty.

Why was this day so special, other than the obvious reason of Cory getting to marry me? ;) I kid. It was because of the small details. All of those small details added up making it a serious dream.

For example, my videographer? None other than my brother-in-law, Andrew Lanier Arts.  My stylist, aka the person who took my vision and brought it to life, stationer and florist was none other than my dear friend and favorite person, Victoria Austin Designs. My photographer? The one that showed up hours before I had booked her for, surprising me at my hotel room, carrying props galore that she knew I loved, the one I love assisting weddings for... oh, her? Yeah, none other than my friend from college, Jennifer Blair. The people that made my hair and makeup look perfect? Those dear friends, Morgan King and Brooke Miller! The bridesmaids and groomsmen that celebrated that day the most with us? Yeah, those were Cory's brothers and my sisters. The person who walked me down the aisle and performed our ceremony? That would be my tear-jerking Dad. The Bible he preached the ceremony from? It was one that he had made with Cory and my name on it, for us to have for years to come.

That, my friend, is what makes a wedding more than a Pinterest fest. Those details make it a day that you remember and cherish, even when the dress, colors and vision are one day out of style.
